Published by Steidl in 2023, Mary Ellen Mark: Encounters surveys a body of work shaped by sustained attention to people at society’s margins. Mark photographed with the directness of a photojournalist, yet her pictures resist reducing their subjects to social categories. Across institutions, streets, places of work and itinerant communities, the encounter remains central: a meeting in which vulnerability, self-possession and the photographer’s own proximity are all visible.

The book is organized around five defining projects. Ward 81 portrays women living in an Oregon psychiatric hospital; Falkland Road concerns sex workers in Mumbai; another series follows Mother Teresa’s charitable work; Indian Circus records families belonging to traveling circuses; and Streetwise traces the life of Erin Blackwell, known as Tiny, over more than three decades. Seen together, these projects reveal both the geographical reach of Mark’s practice and her recurring commitment to lives commonly represented from a distance.

Encounters does more than assemble familiar photographs. Original magazine layouts place Mark’s images within the print culture for which many were made, while contact sheets, correspondence and notebooks disclose the editorial and practical structures surrounding them. This archival dimension is especially important to understanding a photographer who worked as a freelancer while American photojournalism was changing and women were pressing for greater authority within public and professional life. The material connects finished images to assignments, selection and long-term relationships.

For a serious photobook collection, the volume’s significance lies in that conjunction of major series and working documents. Its 264-page hardcover format offers a substantial cross-section of Mark’s career without treating individual photographs as detached icons. Instead, the book restores context—social, editorial and biographical—and makes visible the persistence behind her humanistic approach. It is a considered point of entry into Mark’s work and a useful study of how documentary photographs acquire meaning through duration, publication and return.
