Spanning Mary Ellen Mark’s work from 1963 until her death in 2015, The Book of Everything brings together more than 600 photographs alongside a wide range of texts. Conceived and edited by filmmaker Martin Bell—Mark’s husband and collaborator for three decades—the three-volume publication is not simply a chronological survey. It constructs an extended account of a photographer whose stories grew from sustained attention to particular people and places, sometimes maintained over many years.

Bell drew from thousands of contact sheets and transparencies representing more than two million frames. His selection places photographs long associated with Mark beside images published only once, choices she had made but not previously published, and several of his own selections. That mixture complicates the familiar outline of a major body of work: recognized pictures retain their force, while less familiar material exposes the decisions, continuities, and unresolved possibilities surrounding them.

Mark’s photography is distinguished here by the seriousness of the encounter. She entered difficult and at times tragic circumstances with preparation, empathy, and a commitment to the individuals before her. Recollections by friends, colleagues, and photographed subjects widen the perspective beyond the photographer’s authority.
