Description

Catholic Girl is an important contemporary release because it transforms a foundational but long-unpublished early project by Andrea Modica into a finished photobook object. The pictures were made in 1984, when Modica was still developing her visual language, yet they already show the emotional intensity, formal discipline, and psychological depth that would later make her one of the most respected American photographers working with large-format portraiture.

The work focuses on students in Catholic girls’ schools in Brooklyn and New Haven. Uniforms, posture, gesture, hairstyle, and facial expression become carriers of individuality within an institutional setting. For collectors, the appeal lies not only in the imagery but in the book’s position within Modica’s oeuvre: it is effectively an origin-point book, revealing the beginning of themes that would echo throughout her later practice.

The 2023 L’Artiere first edition is especially appealing as a photobook object because it was issued as a softcover volume housed in a box/slipcase-style presentation. That packaging gives it stronger object-value than a standard trade softcover. The title appears to have been well received and later moved into additional-market circulation, with evidence of a second edition and limited edition variants emerging afterward. As a result, the true first 2023 issue should remain the most desirable standard collectible state.

For collectors of contemporary American photography, women photographers, and books that document the emergence of an artist’s mature voice, Catholic Girl has solid long-term interest. It is not yet an ultra-rare market trophy, but it has many of the characteristics of a book that will age well: strong author reputation, coherent body of work, distinctive production, and a meaningful place in the artist’s career.
