In “Notations,” world-renowned photographer Richard Misrach explores the aesthetic possibilities of the negative image, a project spanning from 2006 to 2021. Inspired by Ansel Adams’ comparison of a negative to a musical score and John Cage’s 1969 book of the same name, Misrach presents natural landscapes as “scores” teetering on the edge of abstraction. By reversing the color spectrum, he transforms familiar vistas into sublime, otherworldly visions, offering a poignant homage to the end of the analog era and the transition to digital craftsmanship.
