Description

Semaphore employs a carefully considered visual approach to explore communication and signaling in urban and natural environments. Through a focus on patterns, structures, and the physical language of signs, the photographs reveal intersections between human-made symbols and the surrounding landscape.

Torrance York’s 96-page collection, published by Kehrer Verlag in 2022, uses composition and form to highlight the semiotic aspects of visual cues. The work meditates on how meaning is conveyed and received through coded imagery embedded in everyday settings.
