Beginning in the mid-1990s, Louisiana-born photographer Debbie Fleming Caffery lived and worked on the grounds of a Catholic church in a small village in northeastern Mexico, even using a simple tortilla shack as her makeshift studio. This monograph captures the “multiple realities” of this community, moving between the spiritual fervor of religious feasts and the shadowy secrets of a nearby cantina that doubled as a brothel. Her work is characterized by a painterly use of light and dark, documenting a turbulent emotional landscape where grace, redemption, and human desire coexist.
