The Settlements is a topographical portrait of the architecture and landscape of the Jewish settlements in the West Bank, captured by American photographer Ken Taranto over a four-year period. Devoid of color and human presence, the 53 duotone images in this volume strip away political rhetoric to lay bare the roads, fences, and houses that define the region. Taranto visited over fifty communities—ranging from established towns to unofficial outposts—to investigate whether these sites were indistinguishable or unique. The book utilizes 6 gatefolds to provide broader views of the perimeter, highlighting the tense proximity and the “facts on the ground” of two peoples inhabiting the same contested land.
