Signal Noise

Signal Noise

Hardcover 124 pages

Description

Signal Noise collects Aaron Rothman’s photographs of desert mountain vistas and dense forests, then submits them to digital noise, layering, erasure, amplification and interference. The book is an open-ended meditation on the wish to connect with the natural world and the limits of that wish. Rothman’s interest lies in photography’s transformative rather than documentary capacity: his landscapes test the boundaries between natural and artificial, between real and virtual, and between the world and how we perceive it. Clear views anchor the work in physical space; the processed passages cast doubt on what is real and what is a figment of photographic, perceptual or human alteration.

Radius Books published the book in hardcover at 124 pages. An essay by Cassandra Coblentz accompanies the photographs, giving the work a critical frame rather than leaving the images to stand alone. The pairing matters: the essay is not an afterword but part of how the book proposes its questions, situating Rothman’s interventions within broader arguments about landscape, perception and the collective presence we leave on the land.

The images are rooted in places familiar and meaningful to him, but the subject is less terrain than the act of looking at it. By unsettling the photograph’s claim to transparent description, Rothman asks viewers to consider how much of a landscape they actually encounter and how much they construct. The title’s opposition is never resolved; it remains the book’s working condition.

For collectors, the value lies in that sustained, book-specific inquiry. Signal Noise treats digital manipulation not as surface effect but as a means of questioning photographic truth, and it does so within a coherent project about the American West and the limits of access to it. The Coblentz essay, the hardcover format and the concentration of the whole argument in 124 pages make this a focused addition for readers interested in contemporary landscape photography and in how a photobook can hold doubt and clarity together.
