One Picture Book #87: Ten Years Too Late

One Picture Book #87: Ten Years Too Late

Hardcover 16 pages

Description

Aaron Ruell is known to most audiences as Kip in Napoleon Dynamite, but during that production he was also photographing it. Ten Years Too Late gathers twelve four-color plates made from that double position: some show scenes viewers will recognize, others were made behind the scenes. The book appears, as the publisher notes, on the tenth anniversary of the film’s release.

Nazraeli Press had published Ruell’s earlier monograph, Some Photos, in 2007. Ten Years Too Late is number 87 in the publisher’s One Picture Book series: a hardcover of sixteen pages, with twelve four-color plates and one original signed photograph by Ruell, issued in a numbered limitation of 500 copies. The series format suits the material, concentrating a decade’s hindsight into a compact sequence rather than a survey.

What distinguishes the project is authorship. These are not the work of an assigned still photographer but of a cast member who was also looking, and the pictures carry an access a hired observer would not have had. Yet the book is not simply a souvenir of the film. Its subject is the production as a place, and a performer learning to see it while belonging to it. Presented ten years on, the photographs invite a second look at what was, at the time, ordinary working life on a set.

The photographs and their making are the center of the book; the limitation and the signed print belong to its description, not its argument. For readers drawn to the film, to behind-the-scenes photography, or to Ruell’s collaboration with Nazraeli, this is a concentrated record of pictures taken from inside a production by someone who was both participant and observer.
