Son Pictures brings together Trent Davis Bailey’s photographs, writing and family archive in a reflection on loss, parenthood and the ways images shape memory. Bailey’s mother died in the 1989 crash of United Airlines Flight 232 in Sioux City, Iowa. The project approaches that history through both intimate records and images made for public circulation, asking how a family’s experience is represented and remembered. Becoming a father in 2019 gave Bailey another perspective on the material.
The book combines his photographs and texts from the preceding decade with his mother’s drawings and paintings from the 1960s and 1970s, and family photographs from several generations. Newspaper photographs from 1989 sit alongside images taken from films set in Iowa and from a home video, which Bailey rephotographed on a 1990s television. Rather than presenting these sources as a straightforward chronology, the sequence brings different periods and kinds of image into conversation.
Personal remembrance intersects with the conventions of journalism, cinema and the family album. The changing sources invite readers to consider what a photograph can establish and what it leaves uncertain. Grief is accompanied by moments of humour and hope, giving the work a wider emotional range than a record of a single event.
