Felipe Romero Beltrán’s Bravo takes as its ground a 270-kilometre stretch of the Rio Bravo, the river that separates Mexico from the United States. Yet the river rarely surfaces in the pictures. It works instead as an implied presence — what the photographer treats as a silent protagonist — organizing lives that unfold in its shadow. Through portraits, bare interiors, and damaged terrain, Beltrán attends to the waiting that defines migration here: months and sometimes years spent near a crossing that remains uncertain.
The book, published by Loose Joints in 2025, is arranged in three chapters — Endings, Bodies, Breaches — whose sequence gives shape to a documentary method that is deliberate about what it withholds. Everyday objects carry unusual weight: a speaker, a mattress, a red-painted table. The portraiture both discloses and protects the people in it, and the interiors hold a quiet that feels inseparable from the political reality outside. Throughout, questions of classification, enclosure, and identification run beneath the surface, echoing the border’s own procedures of definition.
Bravo also incorporates El Cruce, an audiovisual work in which the river appears as both life source and militarized boundary, registering baptism, fishing, and migrant testimony. The book’s accompanying texts come from the Salvadoran migrant Dominick Bermúdez, the thinker Albert Corbí, and the artist Alejandra Aragón, joined by an interview with the photographer; Victoria del Val is also credited as a contributor. Co-published in English by Loose Joints and in Spanish by Fundación MAPFRE, with design by Loose Joints Studio, the volume runs 168 pages with 61 colour plates.
For collections that follow contemporary documentary photography as it tests its own conventions, Bravo is a considered acquisition. Beltrán’s prior series Dialect was published by Loose Joints in 2023, and his work has been recognized through a number of awards and shortlistings, giving this book a coherent place within an ongoing project rather than an isolated debut.
