Tempora Morte is the first photobook by photographer Lia Darjes, published by Hartmann Books in 2019. The 72-page hardcover measures 22 by 24 cm and contains 30 illustrations. It carries a tipped-in picture and foil-stamped lettering. The book includes text by Andrei Zavadski and appears in German, Russian and English. The publisher notes that the work grew out of a residency in Kaliningrad, formerly East Prussia.
The publisher states that during her residency Darjes encountered small improvised roadside market stands in the Kaliningrad oblast, a Russian exclave situated between Poland and Lithuania. Until 1991 the oblast was a military area with heavily restricted access. On the simplest stands, the publisher writes, older women offer what they harvest by hand from gardens, nearby fields and forests to supplement their pensions. The goods are presented on the ground, on wooden boxes, newspapers or simple camping tables.
Darjes combines these arrangements of food and flowers with a small number of portraits of market women and traders. Her photographs connect the visual traditions of still life with a documentary account of present-day livelihoods.
