Immergrün

Hardcover with tipped-in image hardcover German, English 112 pages 18.3 × 24

Description

Immergrün is a photographic book by Loredana Nemes, published by Hartmann Books in 2021. The 112-page hardcover with a tipped-in cover image measures 18.3 × 24 cm and includes 50 tritone illustrations alongside poems by Nemes and a text by Alke Hollwedel. The German and English edition was edited by the Ludwigsburg Museum together with Alke Hollwedel, with cover and book design by Hannah Feldmeier, Leipzig. ISBN 978-3-96070-063-0.

For the project, Nemes portrayed long-term couples who had responded to a call for lovers placed in the Ludwigsburger Kreiszeitung. She pairs quiet, abstract black-and-white portraits with photographs of evergreen plants, and adds a further layer to the images through poems. The couples she spoke with and photographed are women and men whose love and intimacy she approaches in these photographs. Immergrün refers back to her 2012 series Blütezeit (Blossom Time), also initiated and supported by the Ludwigsburg Museum, for which she portrayed young people on the threshold of adulthood. In both series she experiments with the possibilities and limits of photography.

In Immergrün, Nemes uses analog double exposures to visualize the connection between two lovers and, at the same time, the fading that awaits everyone. The result is presented by the publisher as a sensitive artist’s book whose choice of materials and narrative flow create a multilayered whole. The book coincided with an exhibition at the Museum Ludwigsburg, May 15–September 19, 2021.
