VOID

Hardcover in layflat-binding hardcover English 104 pages 21.2 × 32

Description

Satijn Panyigay’s first artist book, VOID, gathers several years of work made largely in empty museums and storage depots. Born in Nijmegen in 1988 and trained at the Utrecht School of Art, Panyigay photographs architecture at its quietest: the point at which a room has been emptied of its public and reduced to proportion, surface, and light. The book takes up Blaise Pascal’s observation about humanity’s inability to sit alone in a room as an invitation rather than a rebuke, testing what solitude can hold.

Panyigay works consistently in analog, and the palette stays subdued. Against the emphatic stillness of the spaces, she sets rhythmic architectural abstractions, so that tranquility and structure keep answering each other. The sequence moves from dark images toward light, and the design by the Dutch studio -SYB- gives it a physical form that cannot be transferred to a screen: fourteen foldouts alternate to the right and left, opening the closed book from 21.2 by 32 cm to 42.4 by 64 cm and turning the act of looking into something intimate and deliberate.

The object itself is built for that attention: hardcover in layflat binding, 104 pages, thirty-nine illustrations, with a laser-cut 2 mm black cardboard cover and a note asking the reader to handle it with care. The layout is not decoration added to the photographs; it determines their pacing, and it is the reason the book earns its place on a shelf rather than in a browser tab.

VOID was published by Hartmann Books in 2023 and received the Silver Medal at the German Photobook Award 2024, recognition that treats the book as a considered piece of work rather than a container for pictures. In the Netherlands, Panyigay has shown in a number of museum exhibitions, while in Germany she remains less familiar. For a collector drawn to minimalist photography and to the photobook as a designed instrument, this is a considered and quietly ambitious debut.
