UKG

UKG

Hardback hardcover English 96 pages

Description

In the summer of 1998, Ewen Spencer was photographing nightlife for Sleazenation when UK garage was still a sound finding its audience. The photographs gathered in UKG come from that moment, documenting the scene in its early days rather than at the point of its broad commercial visibility. Spencer’s affiliation with the magazine gave him access to the clubs and crowds where the music was being tested, and the resulting images are the work of a photographer moving inside the room he pictures.

GOST Books’ 2013 hardback presents forty photographs across ninety-six pages, with a foil-debossed cover. The selection is accompanied by an introduction from Mike Skinner, whose work as The Streets belongs to British dance music, and an essay by the photographer Jason Evans. Photography is by Spencer; the supporting texts are by Skinner and Evans, and they frame the images.

What distinguishes the book is its date. Made within a few years of the scene’s emergence, the pictures carry the texture of the period. Spencer treats the dance floor as a place of gesture, dress and exchange, and the sequencing lets those small codes accumulate into a portrait of a subculture at a particular threshold.

For readers interested in British photography and in documents of music culture, UKG is a compact record of a specific milieu. Its collaborative structure, its period specificity and its provenance in magazine nightlife work give it a clear place among photographic accounts of the UK’s dance music decades.
