Kiss it!

Kiss it!

Hardback hardcover English 112 pages

Description

Kiss it! was published by GOST Books in 2023 as a 112-page hardback photobook. It is the result of a long-term collaboration between photographer Abbie Trayler-Smith and Shannon, a young woman living with obesity. Over 12 years, Trayler-Smith documented Shannon’s journey from teenager to adult, covering friendships, family, first boyfriends, prom nights, holidays, and jobs. The publisher credits Sally Williams as author.

Shannon is the central inspiration for Trayler-Smith’s longer project, The Big O, which examines obesity in school-age children and young adults. The publisher describes Kiss it! as growing from this sustained engagement rather than from a single assignment. That context links the book to a broader body of work concerned with how obesity is discussed and represented.

Trayler-Smith has described meeting Shannon at a press conference on health services for teenagers, where Shannon read a poem asking professionals to see her without judgment. Trayler-Smith recognized a shared experience of being judged for her body, as well as a difference: Shannon’s willingness to speak publicly. The encounter led to a portrait project based on long-term access and trust.

Across its 112 pages, the book follows Shannon through changing circumstances, relationships, and self-presentation. Its subjects include friendships, family, work, and celebrations. Kiss it! is a contemporary documentary photobook shaped by a sustained relationship between photographer and subject, and by Trayler-Smith’s related investigation of obesity among young people.
