Bike Life

Paperback English 208 pages 26.04 × 26.04 850 g

Description

Brian Finke’s photographs of New York City’s Bike Life scene follow a loose, self-organising network of riders — mostly teenagers and young adults — who take over streets in numbers that can run from a handful to well over a thousand. The book tracks the ride-outs themselves: ten to thirty-five miles through the city, with wheelies, swerving, dancing and surfing that turn a route into a performance and leave bystanders watching. Finke began the project in 2020, and the pictures come from inside the crowd rather than from the kerb.

The community’s circulating phrase, “We’re outside,” is the hinge of the book. It is a claim of presence, and of a way of carrying yourself — freedom and mutual encouragement, individual style honoured on the bike and off it. That emphasis shapes the editing: group passages and solo portraits sit together without one explaining the other away.

Finke has spent a career on American subcultures, and this subject suits his method — sustained access, close attention to dress, gesture and the small social codes that hold a scene together. The photographs are not investigative or sociological in tone. They are affectionate and specific, alive to the pleasure of riding with a pack and to the differences among the people doing it.

Blurring Books publishes the collection in 2026: paperback, 208 pages, square at roughly twenty-six centimetres. The trim is well matched to the material — wide enough for the mass of riders, still able to give a single figure the page. For collectors of contemporary documentary photography, the book is worth attention less for its scarcity than for its coherence: it extends Finke’s long look at how groups define themselves through style and motion, and it holds a scene that mostly exists in the moment it is being ridden.
