Fred Herzog: Modern Color

Hardcover with a photographically illustrated dust jacket Hardcover English 320 pages 27.0 x 27.0 cm 2.05 kg

Description

Fred Herzog: Modern Color is the most extensive publication to date on the life and work of the Canadian photography pioneer. While art photography in the 1950s and 60s was strictly a black-and-white medium, Herzog worked almost exclusively with Kodachrome slide film, capturing the vivid, raw energy of Vancouver’s working-class neighborhoods, neon-lit streets, and vacant lots. His mastery of color and light prefigured the “New Color” movement of the 1970s. This volume brings together over 230 images—many previously unpublished—and features critical essays by David Campany, Hans-Michael Koetzle, and artist Jeff Wall. The book highlights Herzog’s unique ability to transform mundane street scenes into poetic observations of a bygone era, made possible by modern archival pigment printing that finally matches the intensity of his original slides.
