Men at Work: 69 Classic Photographs

Paperback English 63 pages 21 × 28 cm 230g

Description

This 1977 Dover edition is a revised and enlarged republication of Lewis Hine’s 1932 classic, featuring 18 additional photographs not included in the original Macmillan release. Hine, a sociologist-turned-photographer, spent decades documenting the American workforce, but “Men at Work” stands as his most celebratory project. Moving away from the reformist “concerned photography” of his child labor investigations, this volume celebrates the dignity and technical skill of the modern craftsman. The collection is famous for its “sky boy” images of the Empire State Building’s construction, capturing workers on steel girders hundreds of feet above New York City. Produced in collaboration with the George Eastman House, these 69 plates document the heroic interaction between man and machine during the height of the Great Depression.
