Kamaitachi

Description

Kamaitachi is a photobook by Eikoh Hosoe that explores themes of surrealism and folklore through stark, high-contrast black-and-white images. The work visually interprets the mythological creature kamaitachi, blending human forms with natural landscapes to evoke a sense of otherworldly disturbance and dreamlike narrative.

Photographed with a raw and grainy texture, the images employ dramatic shadow and abstraction to heighten the eerie and unsettling mood. Hosoe’s approach disrupts conventional portraiture and landscape, merging figures and environment into ambiguous compositions that challenge perception and invite contemplation.

Kamaitachi was published by Aperture in 2009, comprising 112 pages that allow an immersive view into Hosoe’s expressionistic vision.
